RESIDENTIAL DESIGN

From there, we prepare sketches of site plans, floor plans and exterior elevations based on the program. With the design concept approved, Fitzgerald Architects then prepares a complete set of construction plans with technical drawings and specifications that define the construction requirements.

During construction, we act as your representative to review the progress and quality of the work and assure that the design is executed as planned. We stay involved in construction until the project is completed.

BROAD RUN RESIDENCE

Jefferson, Maryland

This new wood frame house in rural Maryland is designed to look like an old farmhouse nestled among the gently rolling hills. A traditional house with modern amenities, the home features 2-over-2 windows, wrap-around porch, heart pine floors and four panel doors. A formal layout allows a view from the entrance foyer through the center hallway, the open dining/family room and across the porch to the woodlands beyond. A tight, efficient plan eliminates wasted spaces while providing large rooms with no unsightly bulkheads and with recessed closets.

Designed around the concept of “aging in place”, the house includes a library on the first floor that can be converted to a bedroom in the future with access to a powder room that is adaptable for accessibility. Hardwood and tile floors, 36” wide doors with lever handles and stairs wide enough to accommodate a chair-lift make the home comfortable for today’s living and for years to come. Integrated wiring provides flexibility and convenience throughout the house for audio/video and internet connectivity.

WILLOWDALE RESIDENCE

Shepherdstown, West Virginia

A lovely Colonial-style home is renovated to add a master suite, deck and pool in historic Shepherdstown, WV. The addition blends seamlessly with the existing house constructed of insulated pre-cast concrete panels. The pool is sited to enhance a natural setting with access from the new deck off the master bedroom suite and the existing family room. Working around the constraints of existing equipment and septic field, the existing deck is modified instead of completely demolished. The existing framework is preserved, the stairs reconfigured and new decking, railing and a trellis added to complete the design. The two decks and patio provide bi-level space overlooking the pool and a nearby gazebo for comfortable entertaining.

BLUE RIDGE RESIDENCE

Stuarts Draft, Virginia

A grassy meadow along the Blue Ridge Mountains provides the setting for this Virginia home adapted from an early 18th century log barn. Dismantled and re-built on its present site, the interior features exposed logs and wide plank flooring. Structural insulated panels support the standing-seam metal roof and the open interior is finished with the original log rafters and 2×6 V-groove fir planks. A large stone fireplace anchors the two-story living space and the loft areas above are connected via a catwalk where an old hay rack is adapted for railing.
